Front Row Filmed Entertainment to Release City of God in Gulf Countries

Middle East distributor, Front Row Filmed Entertainment, is set to make a ground-breaking move by releasing the iconic Oscar-nominated film, City of God, in the Gulf countries for the first time. Co-directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, this Rio de Janeiro gangland drama caused a sensation in 2002 for its realistic depiction of the rise of gang violence in the favelas. Initially hindered by local restrictions, Front Row released the film directly to DVD. However, now, after two decades, they are releasing it theatrically, marking a significant and promising shift in the region.

Front Row’s decision to release City of God across Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates comes at a pivotal time. The film’s planned release coincides with the 21st anniversary of its 2003 theatrical premiere at Cannes, where it was presented out of competition. Additionally, Front Row’s own 20th Anniversary celebration aligns with this release, making it a momentous occasion for the company. By bringing City of God back to the big screen, the distributor aims to pay homage to the film’s place in their history while also celebrating its enduring impact.

To ensure the successful distribution of City of God, Front Row is partnering with The Festival Agency, headed by Leslie Vuchot. The rights to the film were acquired from Wild Bunch, adding credibility to the project. This collaboration is part of a larger effort by Front Row to bring classic films to the Gulf region that were not initially released in theaters. Recent re-releases like Old Boy, Spirited Away, and Howl’s Moving Castle have been well-received, prompting the company to plan even more screenings. Front Row has also re-released Luc Besson’s Leon and has intentions of bringing his cult film, The Fifth Element, to the region’s cinemas in the near future.

City of God may not have taken home any Academy Awards from its four nominations at the 76th ceremony, but that has not dampened its stature as a cinematic masterpiece. Considered one of the top films of all time by critics, it currently holds the impressive rank of #25 on IMDB. The film’s gripping storytelling and raw portrayal of gang violence have ensured its enduring popularity. With a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, it is evident that moviegoers are captivated by its authenticity and profound impact.

Of particular importance to Front Row is the burgeoning cinema scene in Saudi Arabia. After a 35-year ban on movie theaters, the country is experiencing a renaissance in the film industry, and Front Row is dedicated to contributing to this cultural transformation. By re-releasing classics and cult films, the company aims to enrich the cinematic landscape in Saudi Arabia and provide audiences with a diverse range of films.

Front Row Filmed Entertainment’s decision to release City of God across the Gulf countries marks a significant milestone in the region’s film industry. It symbolizes a bold step towards embracing diverse and thought-provoking cinema. The collaboration with The Festival Agency and the re-release of other classic films further demonstrates Front Row’s commitment to enriching the cinematic landscape. As City of God makes its way to the silver screen in the Gulf, audiences can anticipate an impactful and poignant experience that will leave an indelible mark on the region’s cinema culture.
