The Broadway Box Office: A Closer Look at Recent Trends

Director Sam Gold’s revival of An Enemy of the People is already making waves on Broadway. With acclaimed actors Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli leading the cast, the production grossed over $1 million in its first week of previews. The show played to full houses, with a seating capacity of over 100% at Circle in the Square. The official opening night for An Enemy of the People is set for March 18th.

Overall Box Office Numbers

While An Enemy of the People had a strong start, the overall Broadway box office saw a slight dip in numbers. The 25 productions playing on Broadway grossed a total of $23.4 million for the week ending March 3rd, a decrease of about 10% compared to the previous week. However, the attendance numbers were relatively stable, only dropping by 4% to a total of 198,730.

Upcoming Productions

Other shows in previews are also generating buzz. The Notebook musical pulled in an impressive $783,763 in its first week, filling 99% of seats at the Schoenfeld Theatre. Opening night for this highly-anticipated production is scheduled for March 14th. Water For Elephants, a circus-themed musical at the Imperial Theatre, had a respectable gross of $540,599 during its previews, while Doubt, starring Amy Ryan and Liev Schreiber, brought in $470,942 at the Todd Haimes Theatre.

As some shows wrap up their non-profit runs and transition to commercial productions, there is much excitement in the air. Second Stage’s Appropriate, which will be moving to the Belasco Theatre on March 25th, saw sell-out performances at the Hayes Theatre, grossing $950,927. Prayer for the French Republic concluded its successful run at the Friedman Theatre, filling 99% of seats and grossing $679,106.

With a season total of over $1.1 billion in grosses and nearly 9.3 million in attendance, Broadway continues to thrive.
