Music Review: Justin Timberlake’s “Everything I Thought It Was”

After a six-year hiatus since the disappointing release of “Man of the Woods,” Justin Timberlake has finally returned to the spotlight with his latest album, “Everything I Thought It Was.” This new LP showcases a rejuvenated Timberlake, who seems to have found his musical groove once again.

With a vibe that feels both nostalgic and fresh, Timberlake kicks off the album with an ode to his hometown, Memphis. The tracks “F*kin’ Up the Disco” and “No Angels” immediately bring back Timberlake’s signature funky style, complete with catchy hooks and his iconic falsetto vocals.

Love takes center stage throughout the 18-track album, with one standout being a seven-minute slow jam that showcases Timberlake’s mastery of sprawling soundscapes. “Technicolor,” produced by Timbaland, exemplifies Timberlake’s ability to craft epic musical journeys that captivate listeners.

“Everything I Thought It Was” offers something for everyone, from the dulcet tones of “Selfish” to the pop perfection of “Imagination.” The inclusion of “Paradise,” a track from Timberlake’s former boy band *NSYNC, adds a harmonious touch to the album and serves as a nostalgic nod to the past.

Timberlake challenges himself to surpass his previous work, with tracks like “Play” showcasing his evolution as an artist. While some songs may feel reminiscent of his past hits, Timberlake shines brightest when he experiments beyond his comfort zone. “Love & War” and “My Favorite Drug” stand out as vocally challenging tracks where Timberlake’s talent truly shines.

With “Everything I Thought It Was,” Justin Timberlake has left behind the woodsman persona of his previous album and embraced a fresh musical direction. Fans can now rejoice in the return of a reinvigorated Timberlake who continues to impress with his musical artistry and evolution.
