Exploring the Impact of Carol Doda Topless at the Condor Documentary

Picturehouse is taking an innovative approach to the opening weekend of their documentary Carol Doda Topless at the Condor by incorporating a live revue of top burlesque dancers before the screening of the movie. The documentary itself delves into the life, history, and influence of the iconic topless dancer who played a pivotal role in the 1960s sexual revolution.

Dubbed as the “Doda-esque Burlesque,” the live revue will kick off on Friday, March 22, at the NuArt in Los Angeles featuring performances by Ashleeta Beauchamp, Vita DeVoid, and Lux LaCroix. The celebration will also take place at The Roxie in San Francisco with Frankie Fictitious, Sweetpea, and Sgt. Die Wies. These performances pay tribute to Doda’s lasting legacy and will be available at select showtimes as the film premieres in various markets.

In addition to the live revue, the documentary’s director Marlo McKenzie and producer Jonathan Parker will be engaging in Q&A sessions across the country. The first session will take place at the Angelika Theater in New York City on March 22nd, where they will be joined by producer Lars Ulrich, Metallica co-founder and drummer, and Grammy Award-winning music producer Jack Douglas. This unique opportunity allows audiences to gain further insight into the making of the film and its significance.

Carol Doda’s journey is intricately woven into the fabric of American entertainment history. Starting as a cocktail waitress, she defied societal norms and legal boundaries to become America’s first topless dancer at the 1964 Republican National Convention. Her captivating performances on a white baby grand piano transformed a North Beach nightclub into a major tourist attraction, second only to the Golden Gate Bridge itself.

Beyond her groundbreaking performances, Doda’s bold use of silicone to enhance her breasts set off a revolution in the entertainment industry. The documentary draws from Benita Mattioli’s memoir, Three Nights at the Condor, offering a comprehensive look at Doda’s life through the eyes of her contemporaries. Dancers, club owners, bartenders, and others share their intimate experiences with the legendary figure, shedding light on her lasting impact.

The documentary Carol Doda Topless at the Condor is not just a retelling of history but a vibrant celebration of a cultural icon who challenged norms and paved the way for a new era of entertainment. The incorporation of live burlesque performances and insightful Q&A sessions adds a dynamic layer to the film, inviting audiences to immerse themselves in the legacy of Carol Doda and the 1960s sexual revolution.
