Synopsis

Set against the backdrop of the new Mexico Territory during its frontier days, the story follows Joe Baker—an aging bandit eager to accomplish a significant feat before his fiancée Dover McBride arrives from the East. Complicating matters is Dover’s brother Tommy who partners with Baker in his outlaw endeavors.

Baker faces challenges from Johnny Cobb—a crude outlaw—and his merciless accomplice Angel Moon. additionally, Colonel Morgan—a grumpy officer nearing retirement—stands in opposition to Baker’s plans while also anticipating his wife Mary Ann’s arrival from the East to join him for retirement.Colonel Morgan learns through his Indian scout Bookbinder that Baker has something planned but struggles to uncover specific details about it.As tensions rise, it becomes clear that Baker intends to raid a well-guarded bandit camp just across the Mexican border. To facilitate this he makes a dubious deal with Cobb: he will trade a woman for a Gatling gun. Just as he receives word of Dover’s imminent arrival—which adds urgency to his scheme—Baker embarks on several stagecoach robberies but fails to find an appropriate woman for Cobb each time.

Eventually discovering Colonel Morgan’s wife Mary Ann during one of these hold-ups proves pivotal; she quickly grows fond of Baker due to how respectfully he treats her.

The Rescue Mission

the abduction infuriates Colonel Morgan who promptly sets out with troops steadfast to rescue Mary ann and apprehend Baker.

Simultaneously occurring, Cobb and Moon meet trader Malachi Morton in the desert for their gun purchase; tho things take a deadly turn when Moon kills Morton over payment disputes before they can rendezvous with Baker.They are soon intercepted by Morgan and Bookbinder who agree not to detain them if they divulge facts about Baker’s whereabouts.

Upon learning about her fiancé’s situation at fort Morgan where she has taken residence in military quarters upon her arrival,Dover confronts him demanding immediate action or else she will marry another man rather.

The night prior to meeting Cobb for their transaction regarding the gun,baker realizes he’s developed feelings for Mary Ann but is rebuffed when attempting intimacy as she remains loyal to her husband. Nevertheless,Baker confides in tommy about taking control of the weapon without surrendering Mary Ann into Cobb’s hands.

Climax and Resolution

Morgan arrives at Bakers hideout alongside scouts only for Angel moon’s attempt on Bakers life resulting fatally against him.Morgan confronts baker physically over what transpired involving his wife yet finds himself reminded by her that he no longer holds authority post-retirement thus cannot sieze federal property like guns anymore.

Cobb comes undone realizing he’ll not get what was promised leading Tommy towards suggesting alternative companionship options which leads him across borders into Texas despite being wanted there.

With Apache allies backing them up,Baker launches an assault on Emilio estevez—the notorious bandit now posing as monk—in Mexico.A chaotic shootout ensues resulting ultimately in Estevez’ demise while drunken Apaches scatter amidst casualties.Baker seizes control over Gatlin gun unleashing havoc until remaining foes flee after discovering treasure hidden within town church only haunted thereafter by thoughts surrounding fiancée words alongside crucifix sighted nearby.

Back at Fort,Morgan bids farewell emotionally surrounded by troops.Baker,Dover,Morgan,and Mary Ann board stagecoach heading back East while being saluted ceremoniously along their journey homeward where party ensues atop coach amongst men adorned like royalty.
