Synopsis
Major Robert parrish (Dale Robertson) serves in the 7th Cavalry but is often seen as his own adversary due to his non-conformist attitude. Once one of the youngest Colonels during the Civil War for the Union Army, he now finds himself under Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer (Douglas Kennedy). His fiancée Kathy (Mary Murphy), who is also the daughter of Parrish’s commanding general, ends their engagement due to his stagnant career progression.Parrish alienates local civilians when he reprimands them for encroaching on Sioux territory with threats of violence. Frustrated with Parrish’s behavior,General Custer—who is also his former father-in-law—reassigns him along with his company to work under the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Outraged by how Native Americans are treated there and refusing orders from an Indian Agent that woudl harm them further leads him into trouble again.
after being court-martialed for insubordination against unjust orders regarding Native Americans’ treatment, Parrish seeks out Ulysses S.Grant—the former general turned President—to plead his case but ends up demoted back down to Captain instead.
In this new role out West, Captain Parrish encounters Kathy again only to learn she has become engaged to Charles Wentworth (William Hopper), a war correspondent who previously held rank as major in service. With assistance from captured individuals including Sam—a former slave now aligned with Sioux—Parrish arranges for Sitting Bull (J.Carrol Naish) to meet President Grant discreetly.
As tensions escalate between U.S forces and Sioux tribesmen leading up towards battle engagements like Little Bighorn where many lives are lost—including those close rivals such as Wentworth—parrish attempts reconciliation efforts with both Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse (Iron eyes Cody). Aware of impending military strategies against them allows him time enough lead these tribesmen toward safety away from conflict zones before facing another court-martial himself resulting ultimately in death sentence charges labeled treasonous acts against army protocols.
Just before execution proceedings commence at Forts’ gates though comes unexpected intervention: Sitting Bull arrives seeking audience with President Grant after hearing about what transpired earlier through conversations shared amongst allies within ranks; believing that “the Great Chief will understand” could sway mercy upon him given intentions were solely aimed at preventing further bloodshed rather than inciting more violence altogether! Ultimately this plea resonates well enough prompting commutation downwards towards discharge rather!

Good movie, Robertson at his finest. Pres. Grant should of had a long talk with Custard. Because that was probably the biggest blunder of all the Indian wars. How he did,nt realize close to how many Indians their were is amazing.

Can never understand how anyone could attribute Custer to be a hero. His arrogance made him a failure. Sad he took so many of his men with him. Mind you, the way so many tribes were treated, you would have hoped the U.S. failed on every front. The American Indian respected the land and traditions far more than any white man did then, and since. A shame they don’t have much of the country today.
