The Sands International Film Festival: A Weekend of Cinema in St Andrews

The third annual Sands International Film Festival, curated by Ania Trzebiatowska, opened this past weekend in the picturesque town of St Andrews, Scotland. Trzebiatowska, a full-time programmer at Sundance, collaborated with a team of part-time student programmers from the University of St. Andrews to bring an eclectic mix of fiction and non-fiction films to the festival. Partnered with Joe and Anthony Russo’s AGBO, the festival attracted a diverse audience eager to experience the magic of cinema in a unique setting.

The opening night of the festival saw the presence of renowned filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo, known for their work on blockbusters like “Avengers: Endgame.” Joe Russo expressed his admiration for the town’s energy and warmth, highlighting the enthusiasm of the students involved in the festival. The Russos, who have a personal connection to St Andrews, emphasized the importance of fostering an academic mindset in filmmaking, encouraging curiosity and creativity among young filmmakers.

Actor Tom Holland graced the festival with his presence, presenting a short film titled “Last Call” alongside his younger brother Harry. The heartfelt project, which explores themes of motherhood and mental health, left a lasting impression on the audience at The Byre Theatre. Featuring veteran actress Lindsay Duncan, the short film showcased the brothers’ talent and commitment to storytelling. Tom Holland’s involvement in the project added a touch of star power to the evening, captivating the audience with his on-screen presence.

In addition to “Last Call,” the festival featured a range of films, including Naqqash Khalid’s debut feature “In Camera” and Anna Hints’ Sundance-winning documentary “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood.” The lineup also included lesser-known gems like Anthony and Joe Russo’s 2002 comedy “Welcome to Collinwood,” starring George Clooney, William H. Macy, and Sam Rockwell. The presence of acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh added an extra layer of excitement to the festival, as he participated in an onstage Q&A session with the Russos, reflecting on their collaborative journey in the film industry.
