The Departure of Anne Chaisson from HamptonsFilm: A New Era Ahead

Anne Chaisson, the executive director of Hamptons Film Festival presenting organization HamptonsFilm, has announced her upcoming departure after the fall edition of the festival. Chaisson started her journey with HamptonsFilm as a film producer showcasing movies at the festival and later co-founded the organization’s advisory board in 2002. She took on the role of executive director in 2012 and has since played a significant role in shaping the festival’s identity and growth.

As Chaisson prepares to step down, Randy Mastro, the Chairman of the Board for HamptonsFilm, is set to initiate a search for her replacement. A subcommittee of the board will undertake a national search to identify the next executive director after the conclusion of this year’s October festival. This transition marks a pivotal moment for HamptonsFilm as they look towards a new leader to continue the legacy established by Chaisson.

The Evolution of the Hamptons Film Festival

Since its inception in 1992, the Hamptons Film Festival has grown to become a significant event on the fall circuit, attracting influential figures from the film industry and beyond. The festival’s popularity has been bolstered by the region’s increased cultural significance, epitomized by the transformation of Montauk into a prominent destination. Under Chaisson’s leadership, the organization introduced various initiatives and programs aimed at expanding its reach and impact.

During her tenure, Chaisson oversaw the launch of programs such as Compassion, Justice, and Animal Rights, Air Land, and Sea Signature, and a year-round “now showing” series. The festival also introduced free outdoor screenings in the summer and educational programs to engage the local community. Additionally, new awards were added to recognize individuals excelling in the creative space, such as the Dick Cavett Artistic Champion Award and The Melissa Mathison Award for female screenwriters.

Chaisson’s departure comes at a crucial juncture for HamptonsFilm, as they navigate the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic. Like many other festival organizers, Chaisson had to adapt to virtual events and drive-ins to ensure the festival’s continuity. Despite these obstacles, she expressed pride in the organization’s growth and transformation into a year-round non-profit entity. As she bids farewell, Chaisson reflects on her fulfilling tenure and expresses gratitude for the opportunity to lead HamptonsFilm through unprecedented times.

As HamptonsFilm prepares for this year’s 11-day festival scheduled for October 4 to 14, the festival’s Artistic Director, David Nugent, and the programming team remain steadfast in their commitment to delivering a memorable event. The departure of Anne Chaisson marks the end of an era for HamptonsFilm, but also signals a new beginning as the organization embarks on a search for a new leader. Randy Mastro’s acknowledgment of Chaisson’s contributions and dedication underscores the impact she has had on the festival’s evolution and sets the stage for a promising future ahead.
