Exploring African Diaspora Through Storytelling: Lupita Nyong’o Launches Podcast

Lupita Nyong’o, best known for her roles in Black Panther and The Walking Dead, is stepping into a new realm with the launch of her podcast, Mind Your Own With Lupita Nyong’o. This ten-part series is dedicated to exploring the African diaspora and delving into the intricacies of identity and belonging from an African perspective.

A Personal Touch

Nyong’o, who has a diverse background having been born in Mexico, grown up in Kenya, and lived in the U.S. for the past two decades, will be sharing personal stories from her own life. In addition to her experiences, the podcast will feature intimate narratives from individuals navigating their identities in cities like Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Los Angeles, Johannesburg, Toronto, and Kampala.

Embracing Diversity

One of the key elements of Mind Your Own With Lupita Nyong’o is the diverse representation of African cultures. The podcast will feature conversations in six different African languages and music from 15 composers. Nyong’o emphasized the importance of making authentic African stories accessible to a global audience, showcasing the richness and diversity of the African experience.

Produced by KQED’s Snap Studios and overseen by Lemonada Media for ad sales, marketing, and distribution, the podcast is set to make its debut on September 19. Nyong’o expressed her excitement about collaborating with Lemonada Media, highlighting the talent and dedication of the African voices, composers, and editors who have contributed to the project.

Lemonada Media’s CEO and co-founder, Jessica Cordova Kramer, praised Nyong’o’s commitment to the podcast, noting that the series is a work of art crafted by the Snap Studios team. With the first two episodes scheduled to launch simultaneously on all podcast platforms, audiences can anticipate a thought-provoking exploration of the African diaspora through storytelling.

While Nyong’o is renowned for her performances in acclaimed films like 12 Years a Slave and Black Panther, as well as her roles in television series such as The Walking Dead, her foray into podcasting demonstrates her versatility as a storyteller.
