A Lasting Hollywood Partnership: Remembering Margaret Riley

It is a rare occurrence to witness a talent-representative partnership that transcends time in the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. However, such a partnership existed between CSI creator Anthony Zuiker and manager Margaret Riley. Unfortunately, this partnership came to an end on Tuesday when Riley passed away at the age of 58 after battling ovarian cancer. Let us reflect on the remarkable journey that led to their fruitful collaboration.

A Breakthrough Opportunity

In 1998, Zuiker was a struggling screenwriter working as a tram driver in his hometown of Las Vegas. He poured his heart and soul into a movie script titled “The Runner,” but success seemed like an elusive dream. It was during this challenging period that producer Jim Garavente came across Zuiker’s script and shared it with Riley, who had recently been promoted as a manager at management/production company Addis Wechsler. Intrigued by Zuiker’s talent, Riley swiftly signed him on his 30th birthday, August 17, 1998.

A Champion and a Friend

With Riley by his side, Zuiker embarked on a journey through the gates of Hollywood. She introduced him to various agencies, and he eventually found a home at CAA, where he remains a client to this day. Riley’s unwavering support extended beyond securing representation for Zuiker; she introduced him to Kevin Yorn, who volunteered to be his agent for an entire year. During this difficult period, when Zuiker was living frugally at the Hollywood Towers, Riley often brought him food from the neighboring deli.

The turning point in Zuiker’s career arrived in 1999 when ABC acquired his script for CSI, ultimately leading to a successful series that premiered in the fall of 2000. The show’s immense popularity gave birth to a billion-dollar franchise that continues to captivate audiences worldwide. Through it all, Riley played an integral role, supporting Zuiker in crafting the initial CSI script and the projects that followed its success.

A Legacy of Guidance and Dedication

In 2002, Riley founded her own management company, Margaret Riley Management, where Zuiker remained one of her top clients. Three years later, Brillstein Entertainment Partners acquired her company, and Riley continued to work with Zuiker until 2016. Even after their professional paths diverged, Zuiker remained a part of Riley’s roster until her untimely demise.

Reflecting on their partnership, Zuiker acknowledged Riley as his toughest critic but also as someone who led with her heart. He attributed his long and successful career to her guidance, patience, and love. Riley’s famous words, “Life is long,” resonated deeply with Zuiker, and though her life was tragically cut short, she had bestowed upon him the gift of a lasting career and the discovery of his unique voice.

As Hollywood mourns the loss of Margaret Riley, her legacy remains etched in the memories of those whose lives she touched. Her invaluable contributions to the entertainment industry, her steadfast dedication to her clients, and her infectious spirit will forever be remembered. In the ever-changing landscape of Hollywood, Riley’s enduring partnership with Anthony Zuiker serves as a testament to the profound impact that a talented representative can have on an artist’s career.
