As Broadway heads into its final pre-Tony weeks, the box office is thriving with a 7% increase in sales over the previous week. Nine shows have completely sold out, including the two most-nominated productions of the year. Ticket prices for these popular shows have exceeded $200 per seat on average. The total box office gross for the week ending June 9 was an impressive $36,011,651, marking a 16% increase over the same time last season. Total attendance was also up by 4% from the previous week and 14% higher year-to-year, with 89% of seats filled across all shows.
Among the sell-out shows were Stereophonic and Hell’s Kitchen, which are leading the pack with 13 Tony nominations each. Stereophonic raked in $872,337 while Hell’s Kitchen brought in $1,638,208. Both shows had an average ticket price around $140. Other popular sell-outs like Merrily We Roll Along and Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club had average ticket prices well above the overall average of $124. Merrily had the highest average ticket price for the week at $228, grossing $1,762,019. Cabaret followed closely behind with an average ticket price of $222.28 and a total gross of $1,899,832.
In addition to the big sellers, shows like An Enemy of the People, Hadestown, Hamilton, Mother Play, and The Outsiders also had strong ticket sales for the week. The two newest Broadway arrivals, Home and Ben Platt: Live at the Palace, had promising starts. Home, a Roundabout revival, brought in $111,564 for six previews and one regular performance. Ben Platt’s concert residency filled 81% of the venue’s capacity and grossed $680,806.
Uncle Vanya rebounded strongly after a week of setbacks due to Steve Carell’s absence. With the star back on stage, the play grossed $1,011,205, a significant increase from the previous week. However, not all shows saw such success, with The Heart of Rock and Roll and Patriots bringing in the lowest grosses for the week.
Season to date, Broadway has grossed an impressive $104,969,902 with total attendance reaching 858,581. These numbers point towards a successful season ahead for Broadway.
