CNN has recently acquired the BAFTA-winning documentary series “Lockerbie” from Louis Theroux’s Mindhouse. The series delves into the 1988 bombing of flight Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, which resulted in the tragic deaths of 270 individuals, including 190 U.S. citizens. This exclusive series provides unprecedented access to victims’ families, investigators, intelligence officers, and other key figures who have previously remained silent on the subject.
“Lockerbie” was produced by Theroux, Nancy Strang, and Arron Fellows’ Mindhouse in collaboration with Sky Studios. Directed by John Dower, the series competes against other notable shows such as Dublin Narcos, Evacuation, and Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland. Despite the tough competition, “Lockerbie” emerged victorious at the BAFTA awards, clinching the top spot for Factual Series.
In addition to “Lockerbie,” Mindhouse is also working on a documentary series about the 20th anniversary of the Columbia space shuttle disaster for both CNN and the BBC. This recent partnership with CNN marks another successful collaboration after the release of “Columbia: The Final Flight.” The team at Mindhouse is thrilled about the opportunity to share their work with a broader audience, especially in the United States.
The acquisition of “Lockerbie” and “Tell Them You Love Me” by U.S. platforms like CNN and Netflix signifies a growing trend of international collaboration in the documentary industry. Mindhouse’s Fellows expressed their excitement about the positive response to their projects in the UK and their ambition to develop more content for the global market. Strang highlighted the significance of partnering with U.S. networks to bring important stories, such as the Lockerbie bombing, to American viewers.
“Lockerbie” is distributed by NBCUniversal Global Distribution on behalf of Sky Studios, while “Tell Them You Love Me” is handled by Kino Lorber in North America. NBCUniversal Global Distribution manages international sales for both series, excluding North America, showcasing the growing reach and impact of these compelling documentaries. This collaboration underscores the importance of sharing diverse and impactful stories on a worldwide scale.
