Devo Returns to Sundance Film Festival for Exclusive Performance

Prepare yourself for an unforgettable experience at this year’s Sundance Film Festival! In an exciting turn of events, the iconic New Wave band, Devo, will not only make their presence felt through a documentary directed by Chris Smith but also take the stage at the newly opened Marquis on Park City’s Main Street. On January 21, just a day after the documentary’s debut, Devo will treat fans to a stunning performance. With tickets priced at $50 for general admission and $150 for VIP, this is an opportunity you won’t want to miss.

It comes as no surprise that Sundance has been attracting big-name bands and performers with films dedicated to their careers. Renowned artists like Dave Grohl and Nick Cave have previously graced this prestigious festival. The moment Sundance announced its lineup on December 6, speculations about a potential Devo show began to circulate. As the band celebrates its 50th anniversary, opening for Paul Oakenfold at Sundance marks a nostalgic return to an old stomping ground for the “Whip It” boys. Notably, Devo gave a memorable closing performance at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival, dressed in their iconic striped prison suits and red energy dome hats. The show garnered such legendary status that it was immortalized as the film “Butch Devo and the Sundance Gig.”

Devo’s arrival on the music scene in 1973, founded by Kent State students Mark Mothersbaugh, Gerald Casale, and Bob Lewis, revolutionized the very concept of a band, a show, and the audience itself. Their unique approach captivated the attention of music legends like David Bowie and Neil Young. In 1977, Devo’s idiosyncratic cover of The Rolling Stones’ classic “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” mesmerized listeners and further solidified their status as boundary-pushing pioneers. Devo achieved mainstream success in 1980 with their iconic hit “Whip It” from the album “Freedom of Choice,” reaching the Top 40 charts.

While Mark Mothersbaugh’s musical talent found an outlet in contributing to Wes Anderson films, as well as beloved shows like Pee-wee’s Playhouse and Rugrats, the band continued to tour periodically in various forms. Their groundbreaking presence at the Sundance Film Festival reinforces their lasting impact on the music industry. In the Premieres section of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, the DEVO documentary will be featured alongside documentaries on other music legends such as Brian Eno and Luther Vandross. This highly anticipated film will have five screenings throughout the festival, including shows in Salt Lake City on January 26 and January 28. Produced by Library Films and VICE STUDIOS in association with Mutato Entertainment and presented by BMG, Undeniable (a Fremantle label), and Warner Music Group, this documentary promises to shed light on the enigmatic and trailblazing journey of Devo.

Make sure to mark your calendars for the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, running from January 18 to 28. Beyond the captivating films and electrifying performances, Devo’s exclusive concert sets the stage for an unforgettable experience. From their innovative music to their iconic attire, Devo’s influence on pop culture cannot be overstated. Embrace the opportunity to witness their live performance and celebrate the enduring legacy of this extraordinary band. Tickets for this extraordinary event are on sale now, so secure your spot and be a part of history in the making at Sundance!
