How Taylor Swift’s Fans Shook the Earth in Edinburgh

Taylor Swift’s recent performances in Edinburgh during her Eras Tour caused quite a stir, not just among her fans but also geologically speaking. The British Geological Survey (BGS) reported that during the global superstar’s concert at Murrayfield Stadium, Swifties danced with such energy that they caused seismic activity in the Scottish city. The vibrations from the Friday night show were so intense that they could be detected from 6 km away, measuring at 23.4 nanometres (nm) of movement.

It’s not just the fans’ dancing that created seismic activity, but also the power of Taylor Swift’s music itself. The songs “Ready For It?”, “Cruel Summer”, and “Champagne Problems” were identified as the main culprits for generating the most seismic activity during each night of the concert. For example, “Ready For It?” alone managed to produce 160 beats per minute of activity, equivalent to approximately 80 kW of power. This amount of energy is likened to that of 10-16 car batteries, showing just how impactful Swift’s music can be.

Despite the seismic activity caused by the concert, the vibrations were reported to have been mostly localized to the immediate vicinity of the stadium and not felt by those further away. Taylor Swift, on the other hand, was overwhelmed by the energy and enthusiasm of her fans in Edinburgh. She took to Instagram to thank her Scottish fans for breaking the all-time attendance record for a stadium show in Scotland three times in a row. With a minimum of 73,000 people attending each show, Swift’s concerts in Edinburgh now hold the title for the most-attended in Scottish history.

This is not the first time Taylor Swift’s tour has caused seismic activity. Back in 2023, during her concerts in Seattle, fans danced so vigorously that they generated the equivalent of a 2.3 magnitude earthquake. The Eras Tour has been a massive success for Swift, with the recent show in Liverpool marking the 100th performance. During this milestone concert, Swift confirmed that the tour will come to an end in December after three final shows in Vancouver. Describing the tour as exhausting yet joyful and rewarding, Swift expressed gratitude for the experience it has brought her.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour has not only captivated audiences worldwide but also left a seismic impact on the cities she visits. From the energetic movements of her fans to the power of her music, Swift continues to prove why she is a global phenomenon in the music industry. As she wraps up her tour later this year, the memories of her seismic performances in places like Edinburgh will surely linger on in the hearts of fans for years to come.
