SAG-AFTRA Prepares for Contract Renewal Talks in 2024

Last summer, the scripted television and movie industry was heavily impacted by strikes led by writers and actors. However, reality shows, variety series, and game shows were able to continue filming seamlessly under the Network Television Code Contract. As the current contract with SAG-AFTRA is set to expire on June 30, 2024, the union is gearing up for renewal talks.

SAG-AFTRA has already started conducting meetings in preparation for the upcoming contract negotiations. The union is urging a wide range of industry professionals, including singers, dancers, stunt performers, voiceover artists, and background actors, to attend these meetings. It is through these sessions that the union will develop its proposals for the talks.

The Network Television Code Contract covers a vast array of non-dramatic programs, including daytime serials, variety shows, quiz programs, game shows, reality TV, talk shows, news programs, sports programs, and promotional announcements. This contract ensures the smooth operation of television productions, as demonstrated last year when popular series like The Voice, Dancing with the Stars, The Masked Singer, and Jeopardy! were able to continue filming despite the strikes.

Financial Impact

The previous deal approved in June 2022 has been lucrative for SAG-AFTRA members, with the contract generating over $200 million annually in covered earnings. This financial stability has been crucial in ensuring the livelihoods of union members in the entertainment industry.

As SAG-AFTRA gears up for contract renewal talks in 2024, it is vital for industry professionals to participate in the preparatory meetings and contribute to the development of proposals. The Network Television Code Contract has been instrumental in sustaining television productions during challenging times, and the upcoming negotiations will be crucial in securing fair terms for all involved parties.
