The Exciting Adaptation of “The Fortunes of Jaded Women” into a TV Series

Carolyn Huynh’s debut novel, “The Fortunes of Jaded Women,” has taken a new turn as it is being adapted into a TV series. Universal International Studios (UIS)-owned Heyday Television, in collaboration with Universal Television, has secured the rights to the book in a highly competitive deal. This partnership, spearheaded by Heyday boss David Heyman and Alan Yang, is set to bring the captivating story to the small screen.

The novel delves into the impact of tradition and superstition on modern life, revolving around a curse that has haunted the Duong women for generations. Beginning with their ancestor, Oanh, who defied societal norms for love, the story unfolds with a prophecy that promises to reunite estranged family members. As the protagonist, Mai Nguyen seeks guidance from her psychic Auntie Hua, the narrative takes unexpected twists and turns that promise to engage viewers.

Huynh and Bekah Brunstetter are set to adapt the novel for television, bringing their creative vision to the project. With a reputation for portraying complex Asian women, Huynh’s storytelling is expected to resonate with audiences. Similarly, Brunstetter, a seasoned writer and producer, brings her expertise in crafting compelling narratives to the adaptation process.

Both Huynh and Yang expressed their excitement for the project, highlighting the opportunity to showcase Vietnamese culture and family dynamics. Yang, fresh off an exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Television Group, is eager to collaborate with Huynh, Brunstetter, and Heyday Television to bring the characters to life on screen. The acquisition marks Heyday’s second novel adaptation in recent times, underscoring the company’s commitment to bringing literary works to television audiences.

The adaptation of “The Fortunes of Jaded Women” is a testament to the growing trend of adapting books for television. With production houses like Heyday actively seeking compelling stories for adaptation, the marriage of literature and television continues to thrive. The success of book-to-TV adaptations speaks to the enduring appeal of storytelling in various forms.

Huynh is represented by New Leaf Literary, Range Media Partners, and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Feldman, Rogal, Shikora & Clark Inc., while Yang is represented by Cori Wellins at WME and McKuin, Frankel and Whitehead.
