The Success of the Twisters Reboot

The Twisters reboot, a new take on the 1996 Amblin feature co-written by Michael Crichton, has stirred up quite a buzz. The movie starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones has garnered positive reviews, with a certified fresh rating of 78% and an impressive 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a significant improvement from the original film, which received lackluster scores of 67% from critics and 58% from the audience.

The movie has kicked off to a strong start, raking in around $7M in preview money. This initial success has raised forecasts from a $50M+ opening to a potential $60M. The Wednesday and Thursday preview numbers surpass those of other recent releases, such as 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Interestingly, Twisters seems to have an edge due to the presence of heartthrob Glen Powell, which could potentially lead to an overperformance at the box office.

According to RelishMix, Twisters has a significant social media presence, with a social media universe of 341M across platforms like TikTok, Facebook, X, YouTube, and Instagram. The movie’s stars, including Anthony Ramos, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Glen Powell, boast substantial followings, with Ramos leading the pack at 2.5M followers. This robust online presence could translate to increased buzz and anticipation for the film’s release.

International Reach

Warner Bros. is handling the overseas distribution of Twisters, with the film already pulling in close to $13M from 38 markets by Monday. The movie is set to open in an additional 38 markets, including major territories like France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, and China. The overseas cumulative total is projected to climb to $45M+. This global appeal could catapult Twisters to international success, adding to its domestic box office performance.

When compared to other environmental disaster films, Twisters is on track to make a significant impact. While it may not reach the heights of blockbusters like Roland Emmerich’s The Day After Tomorrow with a 3-day total of $68.7M, or 2012, which debuted to $65.2M, the movie is carving out its own space in the genre. Industry estimates are optimistic about Twisters’ potential for success, setting the stage for a promising box office run.
