Warner Bros/DC’s highly anticipated film, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” has made a strong start at the international box office. The movie began its offshore rollout on Wednesday and has already grossed $40.9 million in 73 markets, indicating a full overseas opening in the $70 million range. When combined with its domestic opening, the film is expected to surpass $100 million worldwide.
In the UK, the film debuted on Thursday with $712,000 from 1,994 screens. Although this puts “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” in the runner-up position behind the strong performance of “Wonka,” it is on par with The Flash and 33% below the original Aquaman, which both also opened on a Wednesday. The film’s total earnings in the UK currently stand at $1.6 million.
Similarly, in Germany, the movie kicked off on Thursday and claimed the top spot with $520,000 from 589 screens. While this amount is more than double the opening day earnings of The Flash and ahead of The Marvels and Black Adam, it falls 31% below the original Aquaman. Notably, 68% of the film’s revenue in Germany came from 3D showings.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been performing exceptionally well in China, where it has already accumulated $23.2 million as of Saturday. The movie holds a rating of 9 on Maoyan, slightly below the 9.3 rating received by the original film. It is projected to gross $47 million by the end of its run in the Chinese market. However, competition from local year-end titles and a cooling interest in Hollywood films may impact these predictions.
The top five markets for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, in terms of box office earnings through Friday, are China ($13.9 million), Mexico ($3.4 million), Brazil ($1.9 million), Indonesia ($1.9 million), and France ($1.6 million).
Meanwhile, another Warner Bros. film, “Wonka,” has surpassed the $200 million mark worldwide, reaching $215.8 million as of Friday. The movie, produced in collaboration with Village Roadshow and Heyday Films, has earned $151.9 million internationally, with the UK, Mexico, Germany, Australia, and Spain/Japan being the top-performing markets.
Warner Bros/DC’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has enjoyed a strong international box office debut, with promising numbers in key markets. While the film falls slightly behind its predecessor in some regions, it has made a significant impact in others, especially in China. With its anticipated success worldwide, the sequel is off to a promising start and is expected to continue gaining momentum in the coming weeks.
